Initial unemployment claims in Dallas County top the7,000 mark since March

More than 7,000 initial unemployment claims have been filed in Dallas County since March of this year.

The Alabama Department of Labor released the official count for initial unemployment claims filed during the week of July 19 – July 25, 2020.

Some 17,439 initial claims were filed during the week of which 195 were filed in Dallas County either online or by telephone. And of those total initial claims for the week, some 15,461 of those claims are COVID-19 related.

Jefferson County had the largest number of claims for the week with 2,418.

Industry sectors with the greatest number of claims during the week are: Industry Not Available (7,700), Manufacturing (2,010),  Accommodation and Food Services (1,414), Remediation Services (1,379), Retail Trade (1,220), and Health Care and Social Assistance (1,096).

Since March 14 of this year initial unemployment insurance claims filed in Dallas County ranged from a low of 23 to a high of 1,019 for a total of 7,009.

The weekly breakdown of claims filed in Dallas County since March is as follows: March 14, 23; March 21, 48; March 28, 460; April 4, 1,019; April 11, 760; April 18, 612; April 25, 617; May 2, 295; May 9, 320; May 16, 291; May 23, 329; May 30, 232; June 6, 228;  June 13, 218; June 20, 302; June 27, 279; July 4, 249; July 11, 241; July 18, 291; and July 25, 195.

According to the Alabama Department of Labor, Initial claims include individuals who filed first-time claims, as well as additional claims filed by individuals as a result of a new unemployment event. Initial claims also include claims that are still being reviewed for eligibility. And counts for initial claims are not indicative of the number of claims that will result in monetary compensation.
